Whether you are a regular runner, gym-goer, cyclist, weekend athlete or simply dealing with muscular tension from everyday life, sports massage can help you maintain comfortable movement and support your body's recovery.

At KM Massage in Wallington, every sports massage treatment is individually tailored to your body, your activity levels and the reason you have come for treatment.

I'm Kevin Macaulay, an experienced massage therapist specialising in the Jing Advanced Clinical & Sports Massage approach. I combine sports massage with techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release and stretching where appropriate.

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a focused form of massage designed around the physical demands placed on the body through sport, exercise and everyday activity.

It isn't simply a harder version of a relaxation massage.

A sports massage treatment may focus on specific muscles and areas that are working particularly hard or experiencing tension. The treatment can be adapted depending on whether you're training regularly, recovering from activity or simply trying to improve your movement and comfort.

You don't have to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports massage.

Sports massage isn't just for athletes

The name can sometimes make sports massage sound like something exclusively for people who compete in sport.

It isn't.

You may benefit from sports massage if you:

  • Run or cycle regularly

  • Go to the gym

  • Play football, tennis, golf or other recreational sports

  • Walk or hike

  • Take part in fitness classes

  • Have an active job

  • Spend long periods sitting at a desk

  • Experience recurring muscular tightness

  • Simply want to look after your body as part of an active lifestyle

The treatment is adapted to your body and your lifestyle, rather than your sporting ability.

What can sports massage help with?

Sports massage can be used as part of a wider approach to managing muscular tension and maintaining movement.

It may be appropriate for areas affected by:

Muscle tightness

Exercise and repetitive activity can place increased demands on muscles. Sports massage can focus on areas that feel particularly tight or restricted.

Post-exercise recovery

Some people choose massage following training or periods of increased physical activity as part of their recovery routine.

Restricted movement

Muscular tension can sometimes affect how comfortably you move. Massage and appropriate stretching techniques may be used to address areas of restriction.

Repetitive activity

Running, cycling, swimming, gym training and other repetitive activities can place repeated demands on particular muscles and tissues.

Everyday muscular tension

You don't have to exercise to experience muscular tension. Work, posture and prolonged periods in one position can all contribute to stiffness and tightness.

Sports massage before or after exercise

The most appropriate treatment can depend on what you're doing and when you're having your massage.

A treatment may be adapted depending on whether your aim is to prepare for activity, address muscular tension following activity or simply maintain comfortable movement between training sessions.

If you have an important sporting event or competition coming up, it is worth discussing the timing of your massage when booking rather than having an unfamiliar or particularly intensive treatment immediately beforehand.

My approach to sports massage

At KM Massage, I use the Jing Advanced Clinical & Sports Massage method, which focuses on effective treatment rather than simply applying as much pressure as possible.

Depending on your individual needs, your treatment may incorporate:

The treatment is adapted throughout the session according to how your body responds.

Harder doesn't necessarily mean better

A common misconception about sports massage is that it needs to be painful to be effective.

It doesn't.

The aim is to use appropriate techniques and pressure for the individual rather than simply trying to make the treatment as intense as possible.

Your feedback is important throughout the treatment, allowing pressure and techniques to be adjusted according to your needs.

What happens during a sports massage?

1. Consultation

We'll start by discussing your activity levels, any areas of concern and what you would like to achieve from the treatment.

If you're training for a particular event or have recently changed your exercise routine, this can also be useful information when planning your treatment.

2. Assessment

Where appropriate, I'll look at your movement and assess the areas you have identified as problematic.

This helps determine which areas may benefit from treatment and which techniques are appropriate.

3. Treatment

Your sports massage will then be tailored to your individual needs.

Rather than following exactly the same routine for every client, the treatment can focus on the muscles and areas that are most relevant to you.

4. Aftercare

Following your treatment, we can discuss how you feel and, where appropriate, I may recommend simple stretches, movement or other ways of supporting your recovery between appointments.

Sports massage for runners

Running places repetitive demands on the body, particularly through the legs, hips and feet.

If you're a runner, your massage may focus on areas such as:

  • Calves

  • Hamstrings

  • Quadriceps

  • Glutes

  • Hip muscles

  • Feet and lower legs

The treatment can be adapted according to your training schedule and current needs.

Sports massage for gym-goers

Strength training and gym workouts can place considerable demands on individual muscle groups.

Sports massage can be used to focus on areas that become particularly tight following training, such as the shoulders, back, chest, arms, hips and legs.

The treatment can be adapted around your training routine rather than using a standard full-body sequence.

Sports massage for cyclists

Cycling involves prolonged periods of repetitive movement and can contribute to muscular tension through the legs, hips, back, shoulders and neck.

A sports massage can focus on the areas most affected by your riding and can be adapted depending on your training volume and individual requirements.

Do I need to play sport to have a sports massage?

No. Sports massage can be appropriate for anyone experiencing muscular tension associated with exercise, repetitive activity or everyday life. You don't need to be a competitive athlete.

Is sports massage painful?

Sports massage can sometimes feel intense when working on areas of muscular tension, but it shouldn't simply be about tolerating pain. Pressure and techniques can be adjusted throughout the treatment.
